We are a ‘Meaningful Maths’ school, which means that we use a pedagogical approach that – amongst other things – highly values the development of the strategies that children are using when they are doing maths. This means that teachers spend a lot of time getting children to talk about and explain their thinking, so that their existing strategies can be identified and they can be helped to improve the sophistication and efficiency of the strategies that they are using in Maths.
